Rachel Wootten, LMSW

“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” — Jon Kabat-Zinn

Rachel believes that life will always bring waves—unexpected changes, loss, uncertainty, difficult emotions, and moments when it feels like we’ve lost our footing. While we may not be able to control everything that comes our way, we can learn new ways of responding, find steadier ground, and develop the tools to navigate what life brings us. She sees therapy as a safe and supportive space to pause, catch your breath, and learn how to move through life’s challenges with greater confidence and self-compassion.

Rachel works with children, adolescents, and adults, and brings warmth, compassion, and a down-to-earth approach to her work. Her clinical background includes specialized training in trauma and grief, along with experience supporting individuals through major life transitions, chronic illness, incarceration, and other difficult and complicated life experiences.

Her approach to therapy is flexible and individualized, grounded in the belief that a strong therapeutic relationship is at the heart of meaningful work. Rachel utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), viewing these approaches as complementary rather than separate. While the acronyms and terminology can sometimes feel like a lot of jargon, her goal is to draw from the principles of each approach and apply them in a practical, accessible, and client-centered way. Person-Centered Therapy provides the foundation for how she builds relationships with clients by creating a space where they feel heard, respected, and supported. CBT and DBT offer practical tools to help clients better understand their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, develop effective coping skills, and work toward meaningful change.

Rachel’s sessions are filled with hopefulness, curiosity, and compassion. She helps clients see possibilities for change, approaches their experiences with genuine curiosity and without assumptions, and creates a comfortable space where they feel safe to be themselves.

Rachel doesn’t believe therapy has to feel heavy all the time. Some of the most meaningful work can happen when people are able to bring humor, creativity, and the things that make them them into the room. She enjoys finding ways to make therapy relatable and engaging, whether that means connecting through humor, music, books, or everyday experiences. She believes there can be space for the hard things while also leaving room for curiosity, laughter, and moments that bring joy.

Rachel believes everyone deserves a space where they feel understood and accepted as they are. It is a privilege for her to sit with people in some of their hardest moments and bear witness to their healing. She hopes to help clients feel less alone as they navigate their own waves and discover ways to move forward.

Outside of work, Rachel enjoys spending time in nature, volunteering at an animal rescue, or relaxing with an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations.
